Work with us

We would like to hear from illustrators based in Thanet for an upcoming project.

We're particularly keen to hear from you if you're interested in cut out dolls, paper art, cardboard, model making, set design and puppets.

If you're interested in participatory art, multi-disciplinary collaborations and share our values, that would be good too.

At this stage, we're just looking for expression of interest and would like to see some of your work.

Please get in touch even if we already know you.

About What's Coming out of the Box

We make curious work for inquisitive minds to make the world a better place.

We like to ask big questions to small children, and big ones too. Central to our work is the exploration of big ideas and finding ways to facilitate and prompt conversations between adults and children. We care. Ultimately, through the ideas that we explore, we strive to play our part in creating a better world.

Our work is multi-sensory and participatory, with a signature DIY aesthetic that runs through all of our productions.

We are a Thanet-based company and tour nationwide. In recent years, we have been supported by Arts Council England via Project Grants. In addition we have been supported by the Kent Community Foundation, Kent County Council, Canterbury City Council and the Gibbons Family Trust. We are associate artists at Looping the Loop, Thanet. Since our incorporation in 2018, we have toured two productions – ‘Inside’ and ‘Bonhomme’ – to arts venues across England.

Previous work included outdoor shows such as ‘Take the Pose’ and ‘Spread the Love’. Since lockdown we have developed two COVID responsive work: ‘The Quest’, a participatory audio play and ‘Sylvia’, a postal interactive experience for families at home.

Our Vision

is to stretch families’ imaginations to create a better world together.

Our Mission
  • What’s Coming out of the Box brings innovative, multi-sensory and participatory work to audiences in places with low engagement in the arts.

  • Our work starts with a question and our signature DIY aesthetic runs through all that we do.

  • We encourage children’s drive to question the world around them and support parents to nurture their children's imagination and curiosity.

How to apply

At this stage we're only looking for expression of interest and we don't want to take too much of your time. We would just like to hear why you're interested and/or how you relate to our work and a link to your portfolio, website or instagram.

Once our project firms up and if we're interested to talk further, we'll ask you for additional information and will arrange an online chat.

Please get in touch by email to What’s Coming out of the Box’s Creative Producer Estelle Rosenfeld. You can send us a few words (up to one side of A4) or up to 3 minutes of video and a link to your work

Deadline: 11.59pm Sunday 15th November 2020.

At What’s Coming out of the Box, we recognise the positive value of diversity and want to promote equality and challenge unfair discrimination. We particularly encourage applications from people of colour and candidates who are currently underrepresented within the creative industries.
